AID a Pet: A Mission of Compassion and Survival

Providing Food, Supplies, and Hope for Those in Need

No One Should Have to Choose Between Feeding Themselves or Their Pet

Over 25 years ago, I witnessed a heartbreaking reality: struggling individuals and families facing food insecurity were also trying to care for their beloved pets. As a community dietitian, I met patients who were not only malnourished themselves but also sharing their limited food with their furry companions—often pets rescued from Hartford’s streets.

The bond between these people and their pets was unbreakable. In a world that had turned its back on them, their pets were their comfort, their purpose, and sometimes their only family. But where could they turn for help?

A Small Beginning with a Big Impact

The need for pet food and supplies became impossible to ignore. In 1998, what started as a small closet in a local community center became Hartford’s first pet food pantry. It didn’t take long to outgrow that space.

Determined to meet the growing demand, we partnered with mobile food sites at the local Salvation Army on Washington Street. Month after month, in rain, snow, and scorching heat, we provided pet food and supplies to the Parkville community. For over a decade, we ensured that families in need didn’t have to choose between feeding themselves or their pets.

In 2021, a turning point came when Father Charles Jacobs invited us to bring our mission indoors to Holy Trinity Church, conveniently within walking distance for many of those we serve. Today, over 100 people wait in line—sometimes for more than an hour—to collect food and supplies for their pets. Thanks to a volunteer groomer, some pets even get their nails trimmed, a small but impactful act of care.

The Daily Struggles of Those We Serve

The people we help face challenges most of us can’t imagine. Many don’t own cars, and public transportation doesn’t allow pets. Vet care is an unaffordable luxury. Even the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) does not cover pet food, leaving many to rely on whatever scraps they can spare—often chicken and rice for dogs and tuna fish for cats.

Some argue that if someone can’t afford a pet, they shouldn’t have one. But pet ownership isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for emotional well-being. The companionship of an animal provides comfort, stability, and hope to those who have so little.
